Nitrate levels (nitrate plus nitrite, in situ) in the Raccoon River at Jefferson varied during the week that ended Sunday, April 26 at 6 pm from a low of 17.5 mg/liter as nitrogen on April 19 to a high of 20.3 on April 23. The rate Sunday, April 26, at 6 pm was 18.8.
Pending legal action initiated by the Des Moines Water Works against Buena Vista, Sac and Calhoun Counties (upstream of Greene County) have made nitrate levels in the Raccoon River a matter of interest to many.
